2009 Hackney Homes Active Residents Awards Winners
In its third year, the Annual Active Residents Awards encourages local people to nominate their unsing heroes. Over sixty nominations were received this year across four categories – Young Resident of the Year, Resident of the Year, Resident Group of the Year and Ron Devoti Award.
Over 100 local people were in attendance to see the winners in each category congratulated for their hard work and commitment to Hackney.
The winners were:
- Young Resident of the Year: Yasmin Uzomah
- Resident Group of the Year: Warburton and Darcy TRA
- Resident of the Year: Carol Jokhoo
A special winner on the night was Hackney Homes Board member Alice Burke who was nominated by over fifteen residents in the Ron Devoti Award for lifetime dedication to Hackney. Well loved and respected in the borough, the award was presented by the partner of the now deceased Ron Devoti, Sid Curtis.

Ron Devoti Award
- Mary Jennings

Deputy Mayor of Hackney, Cllr Karen Alcock who attended the event spoke of her admiration for local residents. She said: “Your hard work and achievements are helping Hackney Homes and the Council on the journey to make Hackney a better place to live and work.”
Chairman of Hackney Homes Board, Rupert Tyson said: “We as a community need to continue to support residents like this, to be inspired by them”.
There categories for the 2009 Residents Awards are:
- Young resident of the year (under 25)
This is to recognise a young person who has made a positive impact in their neighbourhood and is a role model to others. - Resident of the year
This is to recognise an individual who makes Hackney a better place to live. They might have done something unusual or special for their community, they could have helped in the community for many years or they might stand out for starting a new project. - Resident Group of the year
This is to recognise a group of residents who together are having a positive impact on their neighbourhood. The group can be large or small and it can be a formal group such as a Tenant’s and Residents Association, or an informal group who have worked together. - Ron Devoti Award for services to Hackney
This year, an additional category has been added in honour of a well known and respected resident who passed away earlier this year. The Ron Devoti Award will recognise residents who have dedicated years to improving the community in which they live.
