Finding a place to live in Hackney

    Finding a house

What kind of housing can I get in Hackney?

Hackney Homes manages thousands of homes in the London borough of Hackney. We can offer a range of affordable accommodation, including family homes, maisonettes, flats and apartments.

What other options are available in Hackney?

Due to the limited amount of housing offered through Hackney Homes, many people will opt to rent a home from a private landlord. This can be difficult and expensive, but there are lots of properties available. There are four main ways to find a private property to rent:
    1. Ask friends and relatives if they know anybody who has a place to rent. Many people find a house this way.
    2. Look for advertisements in newspapers. Some you could look in include The Evening Standard, Loot, Daltons Weekly, Hackney Gazette, TNT Magazine, The Guardian, Pink Paper and your local paper.
    3. Check the noticeboards in shop windows and the local supermarkets. If the advertisement says 'No DSS' this means the landlord is not willing to rent to a tenant claiming benefits.
    4. Register with an accommodation agency. Accommodation agencies are private businesses that advertise properties to let. Some agencies also act as agents for landlords, collecting the rent, dealing with repair problems and managing the property. There are many agencies to choose from in London.

Where can I get more help to find a house?

Hackney Homes has produced a series of leaflets that provide detailed information about finding a home. They are mainly intended for people who would not get a high priority for housing from us, such as single people and couples without children.
The leaflets are available to download and are also available at our Neighbourhood Housing Offices.
