    Hackney Council's letting scheme

Hackney Homes housing continues to be allocated by the Hackney Council. The Council has developed a system for allocating housing that is fair and provides housing first to those in the greatest need.

How does the letting scheme work?

The Council has a system and a set of rules for deciding who receives social housing. These rules apply to both Council homes (managed by Hackney Homes) and to housing association homes that the Council is able to put forward applications for.
The Council's present lettings policies, agreed in 2002, are based on an assessment of housing need which controls which letting 'band' or group an application is placed. Once an application is placed within a letting band it is then considered in date order alongside similar cases.
Because there is a considerable amount of overcrowding and homelessness in the borough, as well as many people that need homes that better suit their health needs, high priority is only given to those in the most severe need.
A full version of the Hackney Council's letting policy that more fully explains the letting 'bands' and how you should apply is available from the Council website.
