Sheltered and retirement housing for residents Over 55

What is sheltered or retirement housing?

Sheltered housing is specifically designed or adapted for older people. These properties are managed by a number of housing associations in Hackney, the biggest provider is Hanover in Hackney which manages the sheltered/retirement housing previously managed by Hackney council.

The council does not directly provide sheltered or retirement housing.

Anyone who is 55 or over may be considered for these homes. It is self contained accommodation with 24 hour emergency alarm cover.

How can I access a sheltered home?

Hackney Homes residents and local residents who are not currently a council tenant may be eligible for sheltered housing according to age and needs.
Where a very frail or vulnerable older person is being considered, it may be appropriate to clarify the situation regarding their support needs from Social Services or the applicants support network, before being considered.  Sheltered homes will be let through the Choice Based Lettings Scheme.
Owner occupiers may be accepted on the basis they cannot cope in their existing homes because of their medical needs. However, they will have to dispose of any interest in their home before they can move into sheltered housing.
