Community Facilities

A study by Dearle & Henderson indicated that the current level of community facility provision was inadequate for the need in the area.
The quality and usage of existing facilities at Woodberry Down varied greatly and the anticipated increase in the population was an opportunity to improve the range, scale and quality of facilities within the new Woodberry Down correspondingly. The Urban Design Framework proposals included expanding and increasing the range of retail, employment, educational, health and community facilities in line with the anticipated increase in population.

In looking at the best options for developing community facilities, Hackney Council commissioned Strategic Urban Futures to look at the future community facilities needs of Woodberry Down. The report identified the need for a priority community facility which will be built on the old school site as part of the first phase of the redevelopment.
Educational Facilities
In order to meet current and future educational demands, The Learning Trust is proposing:
- To refurbish and expand the Woodberry Down Primary School from 2 to 3 Form Entry (FE) from 2009.
- To expand Sir Thomas Abney Primary School from 2 to 3 FE on its existing site towards the end of the regeneration programme.
- To open a 6 FE mixed non-denominational Academy from 2010, sponsored by Skinners’ Company, currently the Trustees of Skinners’ Company’s School for Girls, on the site of Omberseley, Bewdley and Bowland Houses; Woodberry Grove North.
Health Facilities
The Council has been in discussions with the Primary Care Trust (PCT) regarding the John Scott Health Centre. WIth an increase in the population there will be the need for a modern 21st Century health facility. The PCT and the Council has agreed to pursue the option of building a new facility to replace the John Scott Health Centre on Woodberry Down at an early stage of the redevelopment.
City Health Primary Care Trust (CHPCT) are currently reorganising their healthcare strategy to provide four key health centre hubs across the borough. CHPCT have selected Woodberry Down as the location for one of these strategically placed hubs. The hub will be the main health provision facility within the north east neighbourhood and will provide a higher level of care than regular Doctor’s surgeries.
The current John Scott’s Health Centre built in the early 1950’s is an outdated facility that cannot cope with the demands of modern health care provision. CHPCT are acutely aware of the regeneration project and would like to become an active stakeholder in the regeneration scheme through improving the quality of health care available in the area. The provision of a modern health centre will become a key component of the Woodberry Down projects overall aim of creating a total living environment.
New Health Centre
The City and Hackney Primary Care Trust has been working closely with Hackney Homes, the London Borough of Hackney and The Learning Trust to develop plans for a brand new health centre as part of the regeneration of Woodberry Down.
Commercial Facilities
A commercial-retail study for the Manor House and Woodberry Down area has been carried out by DTZ for English Partnerships. The report recommends an increase in retail and commercial facilities to meet the needs of future growth in population.
