    Recycling in Hackney

    Blue Bin

    Improved recycling services

Where space allows, estates will have two large bins: one for paper, and the other for mixed recycling. The mixed recycling bank will be for tins, cans and aerosols, plastic bottles, cardboard and mixed glass all in together. Paper will be separated out to keep the quality high, so it can be reprocessed into premium paper products.
On estates where space is limited one recycling bin will be placed for mixed materials: collecting paper, tins, cans and aerosols, plastic bottles, cardboard and mixed glass which can all be put in together.
Cllr Alan Laing, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods said, “We know residents on estates wanted to be able to recycle more materials. We have now been able to provide a new style collection bank that includes plastic bottles and cardboard. The mixed recycling banks mean the many residents are having a significantly improved service with a 20% increase in the number of banks on estates.”
For those estates which contain street level properties within the grounds, a Green Box door to door collection will be implemented, subject to an assessment carried out by the Council’s recycling contractor.
For more information about the trials or to order green bags or orange sacks, phone the recycling hotline on 020 8356 6688.

    Food Waste Recycling

From October 2009, residents on selected will be able to recycle your food waste in a container located near your existing recycling facilities. You will shortly receive a small blue kitchen caddy along with a roll of compostable liners.Simply place the caddy in your kitchen, line it with a compostable bag, and start collecting your food waste.
Once the caddy is full, tie the compostable liner, take it down to the onsite container and place the bag inside. The food waste container locks in smells and keeps vermin out. The container will be emptied twice a week by May Gurney, the Recycling Contractor. The containers will also be cleaned on a regular basis.
