Moving to another home in Hackney

    Exchanging homes

Can I move to a different home in Hackney?

If you want to move to another Hackney Homes (council) property, you will need to apply to go on our housing list. Ask at your Neighbourhood Housing Office for an application form and guidance leaflet.
When you apply you can ask to be considered for a home with a housing association as well.
We will assess your level of need. We use a band system to help us put everyone in order of priority and to find homes first for people in greatest need. We will let you know what band you are in.
When a suitable property is available for you:
    • we will contact you and check that the information in your application is still correct.
    • we will check that your rent payments are up to date or that you have kept to any payment agreements.
If you are prepared to move outside the Hackney area, you may get a new home quicker.

When will I get a new home?

The housing list includes people who have applied to become Hackney Homes (council) tenants as well as existing Hackney tenants wanting to move. Not everyone on the list will be offered a new home because the number of properties becoming available for re-letting is often very low.
You will only be considered for the type of home and the area(s) you have asked for. We cannot say how long it will be before you get the opportunity to move. It will depend on:
    • the number of people on the housing list
    • the number of homes becoming available in the area where you want to move
    • the band you are in, the number of points you have, and how many other people are waiting for the same type of home in the same area
    • whether you owe us any outstanding rent.
If your circumstances change you must let us know.
If you would like advice about moving to a new property, please contact your local neighbourhood office.
