About our apprenticeship scheme

The Hackney Homes Apprenticeship Scheme gives the borough's young people a chance to play a part in building Hackney's future.

The scheme offers Modern Day Apprenticeships in a number of trades including electrical; plumbing; multi-skilled and carpentry etc.

The Apprenticeship Scheme is aimed at young people between 16 and 18, and is designed to give them a chance to learn a trade within the repairs and maintenance industry. The training is high quality and provides the apprentices with real work experience and an industry recognised qualification.

Do I need qualifications?

You will need to have a good standard of literacy and numeracy for all trades, acheiving Grade C or above in both Maths and English GCSE.

Where are apprentices based?

Hackney Homes is a multi-site organisation with work centres all over the breadth of Hackney.Trainees are required to work at a number of these centres to provide a wide range of experiences.

What level of National Vocational Qualification or City & Guilds qualification do apprentices achieve?

Once you have completed your course successfully, you should achieve a minimum of Level 2 in Carpentry, C&G 2330 in Electrical Installation or level 2 heating and ventilation service and maintenance.

How long is the training for?

Two to four years.

Do apprentices get additional support?

All apprentices are appointed a Training Officer, and it is their role to ensure that apprentices are working in a safe environment and that they receive effective work experience.  There is also additional support to ensure that apprentices are making good progress with their competency units and meeting their targets.

Apprentices are given the following training in addition to their craft/trade qualification:

  • Induction
  • Health & Safety
  • Manual Handling
  • Customer Care
  • Equality and Diversity

Do apprentices pay course fees?

No. All course fees and examination registration are paid by Hackney Homes.

How much are apprentices paid?

This is dependant on the trade, and on the age of the apprentice.

Do apprentices get a job at the end of their training?

Hackney Homes cannot guarantee to offer permanent jobs to all apprentices. However, our track record is such that a large number of trainees, who have successfully completed their training and gained the relevant qualification, have ultimately become operatives within the organisation and have contributed to the delivery of quality standards to the tenants of Hackney.
